The load measurement in the rigging is a key element for the good management and the conduct of a sailboat, especially on big multihulls. It is the starting point to determine and check loads applied to the boat under the influence of the wind, the sea and the way of sailing.
We use various type of sensors and technologies allowing to measure the strengths in static and dynamic conditions.
The sensors installed are specially designed for the marine environment and perfectly adapted to the project specificities. A particular care is brought to durably maintain the equipment in operational condition.
Most of the sensors used are based on the principle of the measure of deformations by strain gauges, measures by optical fiber are also available.
This is an important element to understand the effects of waves and reeling on the vulnerable zones of hulls. Those data are important for the architects to adapt at best the boat's structure.
Accelerometers are positioned in specific places of the hull. It could be interesting for example to measure the accelerations at the top of the mast. Wireless sensors' solutions are also available.
Sensors' network consists of light detectors, nodes and a simple cable of 3mm of diameter connecting the holds of the boat together.
Unlimited number of sensors.
Water detection partial or critical.
Visual and sound alarms adaptable to the required specificities.
This sensors' network can be also used for the following applications:
Filling of ballastes control
Piloting of pumps
Piloting of simple electric systems
Various surveillances thanks to the addition of detectors (fire, CO, ... )
Sensors' solutions exist, allowing to know exactly the position of the mobile appendixes.
Configuration of sensors and technologies are adapted to the device to be measured:
Angle of canting keel
Position of board or foils in their casings
Incidence of the lifting foils
Rudder's angle
A simple monitoring to know the distance of approach to the locked position and verify that halyards are correctly hooked.
Historic function of the UpSideUp system .
Heel and trim are permanently monitored at high frequency. In case of overtaking the defined thresholds, the computer activates the predetermined safety procedure:
Action on the autopilot
Alarms
Release of the sheets according to the defined profile and the context
Recording of the event
Characteristics of the anti-capsize function (depending on the UpSideUp version):
Heel and trim management. Possibility to monitor other variables upon request
Manage the point of sail context (upwind / downwind) - the tack (lateralization) - the sails configuration
Two thresholds profiles selectable by the user : 2 or 6 relay outputs for actuators
Control of the autopilot
Recording of the UpSideUp events
When the boat sails upwind with autopilot, when heel exceeds a threshold defined by the user, the autopilot will luff up until heel decreases. The autopilot will then go back to its initial instruction.
This function works with B&G autopilots H2000, H3000 and H5000.
The loads measured in the rigging are permanently monitored. In case of overtaking defined thresholds, the computer activates the predetermined safety procedure:
Action on the autopilot
Alarms
release of the sheets according to the defined profile and the context
Recording of the event
The wind data are permanently monitored. In case of overtaking the predetermined thresholds, the safety procedure is activated according to the context:
Alarms
Change of instruction to the autopilot
Release of the sails
Recording of the event
Thresholds can be defined on the following data:
True Wind Speed absolute value
Apparent Wind Speed absolute value
True Wind Speed gradient
Management leeward-windward context, port-starboard management, sails configuration. It is then possible to release a sail if the true wind speed exceeds the max value the sail is made for.
The water depth thresholds are linked to a maximum speed. In case of critical situation, the predefined safety procedure is activated:
Alarm
Release of the sails
Emergency stop of the boat under autopilot
Recording of the event
MOB sources:
MOB Button - UpSideUp remote control
MOB AIS beacon
Miscellaneous MOB detectors
Possible actions:
Alarms
Automatic release of the Jonbuoy or other floating unit
Release of the sails
Emergency stop of the boat with autopilot
Automatic display of the MOB page on the ControlCenter or the remote display(s)
Activation of the MOB function on the navigation system
Distress signal emition
Recording of the event
UpSideUp calculates the collision courses from the data delivered by the AIS. In case of critical situation, the computer starts the predefined safety procedure, according to the imminence of the danger:
Alarms
Foghorn
Navigation lights and projectors
Release of the sails according to the defined profile and the context
Action on the autopilot
Recording of the event
Allows to define sound and visual alarms on all the data managed by the system.
The advanced configuration allows to adapt the behavior of the alarm, to adjust the level of intrusion, the frequency of recurrence, the acknowledgement mode, etc....
Synchronized and timestamped recording, with a frequency up to 2 Hz, for all the variables of navigation conditions, position, loads, behavior and use of the boat.
At least 15 days of data are available. An "incident" button allows the saving of the most recent data set.
The access to this data structure is protected in writing. The data recorded in the NDR cannot be erased or falsified.
Conditional sequential recording.
Thresholds are defined on any variable.
The recording is activated according to these thresholds.
The frequency of recording can also be a function of the variables values.
Several structures of data can be configured for various applications.
Factual recording on a permanent and protected data structure.
For every evolution of a max or min value a record is logged.
NDR proposes two sets of variables of max/min:
Max/Min dealy reach: the values can be reset by the user before a race or an conveying for example.
Max / Min Ever reach: the values can't be reset by the user and gives Max/Min ever reached during the life of the boat.
Factual recording in a permanent and protected data structure.
The various period of use for every sail are notified and time stamped, and the accumulation of the hours of use for every sail is calculated and recorded too.
This device is applicable to all the exchangeable elements onboard, including the crew.
Function dedicated to monohulls with canting keel and only accessible via the CKM (Canting Keel manager) solution .
The system manages, in a secured way, all the logic of the keel manipulations, and the tacking procedure.
CKM integrates the keel's position data and the heel, but also the position of the dagger boards to secure them if need.
He can manage the boat's safety procedure in case of capsizing or of loss of the keel.
The modern technologies and the architecture used in the CKM conception confer unequalled qualities to the system:
Powerful thanks to its electronic computer
Flexible: its CAN bus, its input-outputs possibilities, its evolutionary software
Reliable: extremely simple cabling, robustness of the bus CAN and the electronic boards
Light and compact: without comparison with the other systems on the market
Low consumption and saving energy modes.
CKM controls the hydraulic or electric systems of various conceptions.
Firmware and software adaptive CKM Controlcenter,
High configuration flexibility and process settings
Lots of possible inputs/outputs
Available on rotating masts when two projectors are installed. The projector down wind is switched on and lights the foredeck, the projector up wind is switched off.
The periods of use for each sail are timestamped and the accumulation of hours of use of each sail is calculated.
This device is applicable to all the exchangeable elements onboard, including the crew.
The discrimination of the current sail configuration can be done:
Manually via ControlCenter or the UpSideUp remote displays
Manually via a control panel connected to the NDR
Semi-automatic via a system of RFID control
Automatic thanks to the real time analysis of load measurements in the rigging
The UpSideUp solutions and NDR calculate continuously the statistical values wanted on any variable.
